Paul van Kemenade began playing the saxophone at age 13. He studied at the Conservatory of Tilburg , where he incidentally already played with their own group and compose started. In 1982 he founded the "Paul Kemenade Kwintet", with which he made his first recording in 1984, "Call." Except with his quintet he plays too much as a sideman (with about Schlippenbach of Alexander , Aki Takase , Pierre Courbois , Misha Mengelberg , Willem Breuker , Sean Bergin and Louis Moholo ), as well as projects with musicians and artists outside of jazz. He is the founder and director of the annual festival "Stranger than Paranoia" in Tilburg. Kemenade was a founding member of Contraband .

With his quintet, he usually plays his own compositions and improvised with the diverse influences of jazz, classical music, pop, Spanish music, to South and West African music. You also already played with symphony orchestras (including the Brabants Orchestra) and brass bands ("Harmony Orchestra"). From 1998, they played regularly with South African musicians like Feya Faku , Louis Mhlanga , the tenor saxophonist Sidney Mnisi , Sonti Mndebele and Bheki Khoza , from 2002 with the brothers Guissé ("Les Frères Guisseé") from Senegal (album "Fouta" 2003).Besides his quintet played with Philip Catherine , David Murray , Kenny Wheeler , Zim Ngqawana , the Belgian singer David Linx and Gerd Dudek . In addition, they toured Europe already in Indonesia and South and West Africa (Senegal). Members of the quintet are 2007 next Kemenade Pieter Bast (drums), Rein Godefroy (piano), Louk Boudesteijn (trombone), Wiro Mahieu (bass).In the podium trio he plays with January Kuiper and Wolter Wierbos . In addition, he also performs with Wolter Wierbos together with the quartet of Eckard Kolter man on, about the Berlin Jazz Festival in 2010.
